PGY2 Pharmacy Resident

  • Requisition ID: 178267
  • Department: 200211 Pharmacy
  • Schedule: Full Time - Eligible for Benefits
  • Shift: Varies
  • Category: Allied Health

Position Purpose

The PGY2 Pharmacy Resident position is designed to transition the resident from a general pharmacy practitioner to a pharmacy specialist that focuses on a specific area of practice. The PGY2 position is designed to increase the resident’s depth of knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities to raise the level of expertise in mediation therapy management and clinical leadership in the area of focus.

Nature and Scope

The PGY2 pharmacy residency is designed to meet and adhere to the standards and practice principles set forth by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

The PGY2 residency program is designed to develop accountability; practice patterns; habits; and expert knowledge, skills, attitudes, and abilities in the respective advanced area of pharmacy practice. The PGY2 residency builds upon the broad-based competencies achieved in a PGY1 residency, deepening the resident’s ability to provide care in the most complex of cases or in the support of care through practice leadership. Therefore, the PGY2 residency provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and transforming both into improved medication therapy for patients. A resident who completes successfully the PGY2 residency should possess competencies that enable attainment of board certification in the practice area, where board certification for the practice area exists.

The residency is conducted over a 12 month period, generally July through June. During this time the resident will complete various rotations that are either required or desired by the resident. A timeline of the rotations and their durations as well as a timeline for the resident project are developed during the first month of the residency and are based upon both resident and director desires, goals, and areas of interest. This timeline is a guide for the resident and director. Adjustments and changes can be made throughout the year. The resident is also expected to staff a minimum of four shifts per month performing the duties in the areas where competency has been achieved or demonstrate an equivalent benefit to the pharmacy department as agreed upon by the pharmacy clinical manager and corresponding residency director.

The resident will be assessed and evaluated regularly in order to provide valuable feedback and to ensure that the goals and objectives of the program are being met.

This position does provide patient care.
